Old Timers Day?

One never knows what will turn up at Auto Restoration of Long Island on any given week. Today I pulled up to check on my ’68 Firebird restoration, and my dad spotted a 1940 Ford out front.

Very cool – my dad knew more about that car than I realized “flat head eight” he thought … well close; after seeing the hood open sure enough
a v-8 – updated engine to keep up with the changing times.

Back in those days 1940′s the roads and speed limits were quite a bit different then today – in fact this model car was famous for “bootlegging” big trunk for storage – the standard engine would be replaced with a fast Cadillac engine – hence the begining of Hot-Rods, and customizing cars to go faster and faster.

Have you every noticed at night that your classic or muscle car’s head lights seem a bit dim? Well it’s a fact that 25-30 and even fourty years ago the voltage required was less then what it is today. Maybe you installed a powerful audio system which draws more than the standard AM radio of that era. In any event we are here to help – consider halogen headlight replacements – this technology will give you better vision at night and in adverse conditions.

Also while we are at it – be seen! Even on a clear day your rear brake and signal lights may also be a bit dim compared to today’s standard. We advise led light conversions; these are brighter then OEM , also back in the day there was “no third eye” brake light – so for safety sake consider this upgrade worthy of consideration.

The following are helpful tips and advice from years of experience at auto restoration of Long Island.

Rip Tear Down-

Disassembling the car will likely take more time than you expect to do it properly.

It’s real important that you document each step yeah it’s a pain, but it will pay off big time when you are putting the final work of art all back together .

Take your time, be careful, patient and methodical to avoid breaking parts or missing a piece of whatever. Make sure you have plenty of room and a storage system set up. Shelves, bags, bins and lables will all be necessary. Before you even begin to disassemble the car, take pictures it’s a great idea to take as many pictures from various angles top, bottom, underside, doors, corners, window moldings, the engine compartment and interior all the parts that will need to be detail photographed. With today’s digital cameras and on-line storage theirs no limit- shoot that extra shot!

Don’t rush take your time. When it comes to reassembly, some day a long time down the track, these pictures will prove invaluable. Also photograph every step of the disassembly, so you can recall how that part fits or where that screw went!
